Hunan East Dongtinghu National Nature Reserve, China

East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve is situated in Yueyang city, which covers a land of 190,000hm² founded in 1982. The Reserve is one of the six international important wetlands who firstly joined in “international important wetland convention” in 1992. Its responsibility is to protect wetland ecology and biological resources. And in 1994, the Reserve has been approved as national nature reserve by State Council of the People’s Republic of China.

Unique ecological environment generates unique natural resources, its species have the characteristics of unique ancient, high rare degree. To investigation, 340species of birds have been recorded, including 7 species of first class national protected birds, such as Sibrian Crane, Hooded Crane, Oriental White Stork, Black Stork, Great Bustard, Scaly-sided Merganser, White -tailed Sea Eagle; 45 species of Second class national protected birds, Tundra Swan, Eurasian Spoonbill, Great White-fronted Goose and etc; As well as117 species of fish and 1186 species of plants.

East Dongting Lake is an important wintering, breeding and stopover place. The number of birds here amounted to 100,000. The place plays an important role in Northeast Asia crane migration network, East Asia — Australia Wading bird migration network. The number of globally endangered species–Lesser White Fronted Goose here accounted for over 70% of the world.  In addition, there are a natural re-wild population of Pere divid`s deer. In 2005, East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve has been awarded” Chinese capital of bird watching” by CWCA(China Wildlife Conservation Association). In 2007, 14 countries have participated in the wetland protection and sustainable utilization–Yueyang BBS. Then, Dongting Lake declaration which is a milestone in the development of Reserve conservation has been published. The Reserve is also known as “the hopeful place for saving the world endangered species “、”model for person and nature harmonious coexistence “.
