Xie Y, MacKinnon J, Gan XJ, Yang WH, Leempoel K (eds.). Issued in 2018 and updated in Sept. 2018. Monitoring Planning Operation Guide for Protected Areas. IAPA, Beijing, China: 23pp.
Monitoring in Protected Areas (PAs) includes both human (socioeconomic) and biophysical (ecological) aspects of monitoring. Socioeconomic monitoring normally focuses on people’s knowledge and attitude towards an ecosystem/species as well as their natural resource use and dependence. Ecological monitoring on the other hand will generally focus on a specific species or ecosystem, using supporting information on environmental conditions and associated organisms. Monitoring can p provide information for sustainable management of natural resources, determine changes and threats to ecosystems, track changes in people’s knowledge, perception and use of biological resources, facilitate the formulation and implementation of conservation legislation and policies based on scientific information, develop nature-based tourism, and contribute towards education and public awareness on conservation. The operation guide provide key information to plan a sound monitoring program, and introduce from the importance and general principles of monitoring, Indicators, management procedures, analyzing and reporting monitoring data, and useful PA monitoring tools.
